Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
B's not had everyone out classed for 30 years. I mean..c'mon, truthfully, how many teams have you seen from region d go upstate and blow it. I've seen 2 or 3. And most of those 2 or 3 are from the cumberland. All that tells me is the region is weak and when we have teams go up there that have looked unbeatable here they get it handed to 'em. That's just my opinion tho...folks can say what they want. But results = championships...and until there are some of those region d has nothing to brag about but alot to prove.
-
Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
B pretty much has had everyone outclassed. Of course were dealing with larger schools, but dang back in the 80s you couldn't touch the teams in that area.
TS's state title was a huge upset of Franklin County.

Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
I just went and viewed the last 34 state titles in Group A history. Unless I have 1 or 2 teams regions swapped here is my figures.
Region A has won 6 state titles.
Region B has won 16 state titles.
Region C has won 8 state titles.
Region D has won 4 state titles.
Drewry Mason, and George Washington Carver would have won 5 of those titles for Region C that I listed, if I am correct that this was their region. They are now part of Martinsville and Magna Vista HS's I do believe. They may have been region B as well. Not sure.
So yes, D has not won as many titles, but they were in a few finals, as well, and B has won almost half of the Group A state titles.

Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
sup-rbeast, what we were comparing, or what I was comparing, was the Cumberland to the other districts in Region D.. and then you starting comparing region D to other regions which got us off topic.. I know that region D is not the strongest region but that's not what we were discussing.. All I'm saying is that if all of the teams in region D played each other and you tallied up their wins by district, the Cumberland would have the best record IMO.
-
Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
And all of that leads directly to what i was saying. 1 state title for the cumberland...ALL TIME in boys basket ball. Again...saying you're the best in region D in basketball is like aomeone bragging to the superbowl champs because they won the arena league title. Kinda pointless.
-
Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
Ok.. I see what you are saying then.. And I'll have to agree to being the best district in Region D does not mean that much statewide.. But still you denied the Cumberland being the best district in region D which I disagree with. But anyways, it don't really matter when you get past regions like you said..
-
Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
The only championships i ever counted was State Championships. That goes all the way back to when I was in HS at PV. In football, Lpd Champs was nice..Region D was OK too...but no one ever went around bragging about em. All I was concerned with was a State title...cuz that was the goal and anything short of it felt like failure.
-
Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
Yeah, but we were comparing the quality of the districts this year. How did that factor into state champs, or the past?
-
Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
I was just replying to what I am seeing. Until CW brings home a state championship who really cares who had what. but really..the LPD has GC, cumberland has CW. I wouldn't put SP, RC, or TS heads and tails above Burton. Considering TS was no better than PV or Kelly, I wouldn't put them above either team. RC lost to GC, Burton beat GC once...so I guess the 2nd best team in the cumberland isn't much better than the LPD runner up. RC and TS both handled SP at least once this year so that puts SP in the same bundle. And I don't see any of the BDD teams being any better that any of these. So, there's my analysis. The way I see it, none of the districts is very much better if at all than the others when it comes to Boy's B-Ball this year.
-
Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
Right, so I guess with your analysist JIB wouldn't finish any better than 5th or 6th in the CD since TS beat them when they played one another, and TW beat TS once by 10 as well.
You can't compare things like that and you know it. Basically, basketball this year was a better product in the Cumberland top to bottom than the LPD or BDD. Thats all that was being said.
-
Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
That's right Stripes.. I agree completely.
-
Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
No..you're missing my point. Outside of CW and GC I don't see any teams that stand out enough to warrant any region d district outshining any other one in B-Ball this year. I was just using those examples to illustrate the parity I see. Every district has good teams, decent teams and bottom feeders. Just so happens this year outside of 2 teams, everyone else in the region looks about the same to me. But B-Ball is almost over..looking forward to football.

Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
If it was up to me it would be basketball year around.. no football, no baseball..

Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
Well wake me up when somebody wins something..zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
-
Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
Heck with that! I like the outdoor sports myself. I would go to more Basketball games if they were played out side.

Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
Well you've already said that it will take winning the state championship so that's still a couple weeks away.. And no, I'm not saying it's going to be Castlewood..
-
Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
Well...to illustrate the point...in the LPD football is king...most folks can tell ya JJK has 1 State crown, JIB 1, Appy 6, Clintwood 3,GC a total of 3, and PV 8. Now ask how many regional championships or district championships those schools have and folks will probably answer something like "well..quite a few". And that is my point. 2 years from now who's gonna remember much unless it's a state crown?..Maybe that's a harsh way of lookin at things, but that's how i do. So when the cumberland can do something besides choke in the finals, there will be something to really brag about. Until then what's the point of arguing who has the best district in boy's b-ball in region d?...like i said before...it apprears that this year no one is any better than anyone else...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
-
Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
How many state titles do those teams have this year then? None, it never matters unless you are state champs huh. State championships are great, but regional and district championships are important too whether you think so or not.
I guess there is no point in comparing who is better within the region. I guess we need to just go to a top 16 in the state and do away with districts, and regions.
-
Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
Well I sure hope Castlewood can bring the Cumberland state crown to 2 this year..
-
Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
I agree that district and regional titles mean something but I am in favor of doing a straight 16 team playoff.
-
Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
I am as well, at least for football.
-
Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
I think that would be a good idea...no second chances...and really, district and region champs means little i think.
-
Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
I'd prefer 1C plays 4D, 2C plays 3D, 1D plays 4C, 2D plays 3C, and do the same for the other half of the state. Make for more interesting matchups.
-
Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
-
Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
That would be a good concept so you know the VHSL wont have anything to do with it.
-
Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
Drewry Mason was region C (they beat Pennington Gap in the half-state football game in 1987)...GWC was region C also I think. I know they beat PV in the mid-80s in B-Ball on the way to winning state. If I'm not mistaken that was when each region sent 1 rep. up the road instead of 2.
-
Re: Burton vs Honaker Score...
Yeah, before Henry Co first consolidated, Drewry Mason, GW Carver, Fieldale-Collinsville, and Bassett were all the in the old Foothills District along with Chatham in Region C. Back then, the Foothills and Pioneer basically ruled the region in almost everything, esp. football, I don't even think the hogo or MED ever won a regional crown in football until George Wythe and Lebanon moved down to A besides when Chilhowie won their state title in 1970. The Hogo and Mountain Empire competed against each other in the first rounds of regionals and then went on to be the sacrificial lambs for the other half of the region.
